Why Insure Boat AND Trailer Together?

💰

Save 10-15% on Premiums

Bundled boat and trailer policies typically cost less than separate policies. One policy, one renewal date, one insurer to deal with.

🛡️

Complete Protection

Cover the entire journey - from your driveway to the boat ramp, on the water, and back home. No coverage gaps between policies.

📋

Simplified Claims

One claim process if both boat and trailer are damaged. No disputes between insurers about who covers what in an accident.

What Does Boat and Trailer Insurance Cover?

🚤Boat Coverage

  • Accidental damage - collision, grounding, sinking
  • Storm and weather damage - cyclones, hail, flooding
  • Theft - boat, motor, and equipment
  • Fire damage - including electrical fires
  • Third-party liability - $1M to $10M coverage
  • Salvage and wreck removal

🚗Trailer Coverage

  • Road accidents - collision, tipping, detachment
  • Theft of trailer - even when parked at home
  • Wheel and tyre damage - blowouts, punctures
  • Launch ramp damage - during launch and retrieval
  • Corrosion coverage - saltwater damage to bearings/axle
  • Third-party damage - if trailer damages other vehicles

Important: Transit Cover

Combined boat and trailer insurance covers damage while towing on New Zealand roads. If your boat falls off the trailer, both the boat damage AND any damage to third parties or property is covered under one policy.

Boat and Trailer Insurance Costs in NZ

Boat-and-trailer premiums vary based on hull value, trailer value, intended use, storage location, and the chosen excess. Buying boat and trailer cover under a single policy with a single excess is typically cheaper than two separate policies — confirm with the insurer.

Common Claim Categories

Illustrative examples of when a combined boat-and-trailer policy can be helpful. Actual cover, sub-limits, and exclusions depend on the policy wording — read the wording carefully.

🚗💥

Road Accident While Towing

A road accident while towing can damage both the boat hull and the trailer frame. A combined boat-and-trailer policy can handle both under a single claim and a single excess, subject to the policy wording.

🌊

Boat Ramp Incident

A winch failure or trailer fault during launch or retrieval can damage the boat, the trailer, or both. A combined policy can cover damage to both items subject to the policy wording and excess.

🔓

Theft of Boat and Trailer

Theft from a storage yard or driveway can result in loss of both the boat and the trailer. A combined policy can pay out the agreed value (or market value) for both items, subject to security requirements and the policy wording.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my trailer covered under car insurance?

No. Standard car insurance in New Zealand does NOT cover your boat trailer. You need separate trailer insurance or a combined boat and trailer policy. Your car insurance only covers the towing vehicle, not what's being towed.

Does WOF/registration include insurance?

No. While trailers over 750kg need a WOF and all trailers need registration, this doesn't include any insurance coverage. You need separate insurance to protect against damage, theft, or liability claims.

What if my boat is damaged but trailer is fine (or vice versa)?

With combined coverage, you only pay one excess regardless of which item is damaged. If only the boat is damaged, you claim on the boat portion. If both are damaged in the same incident, it's still just one excess payment.

Are roller and multi-roller trailers more expensive to insure?

Not significantly. The trailer value matters more than the type. However, multi-roller trailers for larger boats are worth more and thus cost slightly more to insure. The difference is usually $20-50/year.

Is saltwater corrosion to my trailer covered?

This depends on your policy. Some policies cover sudden mechanical failure of bearings and axles, but gradual corrosion from lack of maintenance is typically excluded. Regular freshwater rinsing after each use is essential.
